This website is all about my first attempt at building a model railway layout. The layout is to be completely fictional yet roughly based on various Irish locations. The layout will basically run what trains I like as I don't really know much about real trains and rolling stock and what numbers etc they are. The layout will also have various Irish themes, The main terminus, for example being called 'St. James's Gate' after the Guinness storehouse in Dublin.
St. James's Gate - During Construction.
I first became interested in model railways when we went to a model railway exhibition in Cork. That was my first experience of driving a train on a Hornby TrakMat example layout. I drove a 'Smokey Joe' with three wagons around a circle of track, and I really enjoyed it. I found €10 in my pocket and I purchased a Hornby 2005 catalogue. I spent ages reading the catalogue, and finally decided to get 'The Western Pullman' train set for Christmas. We built the TrakMat layout and later built a 16' x 4' layout in the loft of our old house. The layout I am building at the moment is 19' x 11' and is being built in the converted attic of my house.
My favourite Train: Bachmann Class 141 and intercity coaches.
I hope to build a reliable layout that works well (i.e. run trains without them de-railing/ all points that work properly) and that looks realistic at the same time. To make the layout as realistic as possible I am going to incorporate the Faller Car system.
